Why UQ?

UQ's HYPE SPIN acceleration participants raised over AU$3.5 million to launch their startups in 2018 — more than any other Australian university.

Our cohort met with over forty global tech mentors and sports industry experts, gained ten to fifteen new business connections each, launched six new products, formed two joint ventures, met with investors and pitched at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Program schedule

The accelerator is a combination of in-person events and online content. Startups are required to be in Brisbane on three occasions; for the boot camp in April, the mid-program review in June and the final pitch event in July.

The majority of the content is provided virtually via biweekly live webinars, and weekly mentoring and intimate virtual coffees delivered via video conferencing.

Hotdesks can be made available to participating startups who wish to work out of UQ's ilab and meeting rooms can be booked throughout the program. Startups can access a variety of offers for online tools, services and partner deals through the ilab network.

Travel support

We offer travel and accommodation support for up to seven regional, interstate and international teams. This will be used to offset travel costs for the on-site components of the program.

UQ can assist international founders in obtaining a visitor’s visa for the three required trips to Brisbane during the program. We cannot offer advice or support for working or any other types of visas during the program.

HYPE will ask each startup to issue a warrant for four per cent equity at the starting valuation exercisable over three years. Upfront, there is no equity taken and no investment provided. However if within three years of signing on to the program HYPE wish to invest in the startup they can purchase up to four per cent equity at the valuation agreed upon at the beginning of the SPIN program.

The startup also agrees to allow HYPE to make a follow-on investment of up to AU$1M (at no discount). If you have any questions regarding this equity agreement please contact info@hypesportsinnovation.com

The program is open to startups outside of UQ and Australia.

The program supports early to mid-stage startups from a variety of industries related to sports technology, athlete performance, fan engagement, wearables, media, smart stadiums, player health and safety, esports and more!

We accept startups from Australia and the surrounding regions. If you are from outside of Australasia your application may be redirected to the most appropriate global SPIN host.

While companies do not have to have an affiliation with UQ we reserve the right to hold up to three places for UQ startups and five spaces for Queensland based startups.
