Ventures LeadHers

Ventures LeadHers is a confidence-building program for all female-identifying students, staff and alumni across all disciplines at UQ. 

Throughout the program, you will have the opportunity to grow your leadership capabilities, build connections and gain the confidence to take your first steps in your entrepreneurial and leadership journey. 

During the program, you will network and learn from women leading in their fields and explore the common challenges most professional female leaders face in their careers. 

All female-identifying students, staff and alumni are welcome to apply.

As part of the Ventures LeadHers PhD program you will:

  • increase your self-awareness and reflection skills
  • be part of a community of female researchers supporting each other beyond the program
  • discover alternative career paths beyond academia
  • Network and learn from leading female researchers
  • Gain tools to understand how to overcome confidence related challenge

 

Program commences: Thursday, 22 April from 10am-2pm

The delivery mode of the program will be confirmed after applications close. Select your preference: online, in-person or a combination of both on the application form. 

  • Thursday 22 April. Being you with confidence
    In the first week, you'll hear from our UQ Academic guest speaker as she speaks about her journey, leadership style and key challenges she has faced in her career. This will be followed by a Q&A and a chance to connect with each other. 

    Thursday 29 April. Finding a different path with confidence
    You'll hear from a panel of three women leading in academia as they discuss how to confidently branch out of academia into government, corporate and entrepreneurship roles. This session will be followed by a Q&A and networking session. 

    Thursday 6 May. Putting yourself out there with confidence
    In this workshop, you will hear from a female researcher working in a male dominated field she will share in her key learnings to navigate the industry. This will be followed by a workshop on writing your own story. This session will be followed by a Q&A and networking. 

    Thursday 13 May. Planning, Pivoting and moving up with confidence
    In this session, a guest presenter will run a workshop on how to plan for career changes and progression.

    Thursday 20 May. Working with others and leading a team with confidence
    Hear from our panel of experts and learn how you can develop long lasting relationships with collaborators and how to lead a team or a project.

As part of the Ventures LeadHers program you will:

  • increase your self-awareness and reflection skills
  • understand elements that undermine your confidence and how to combat them
  • network and learn from leading female speakers
  • learn strategies and actions to become a confident leader
  • have access to resources and networks to support your development after the program finishes.

Throughout five weeks, the Ventures LeadHers program will be delivered in a hybrid model including self-paced activities, peer mentoring, face-to-face and online.

Program commences: Tuesday, 2 March from 4-6pm

  • Tuesday 2 March. Being you with confidence
    This face-to-face workshop will run from 4-6pm. 
    In the first week, we'll let you know how you can make the most of the Ventures LeadHers program. You'll hear from Dr Jessica Gallagher, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement and Entrepreneurship) as she speaks about her inspirational leadership journey, followed by a Q&A and a chance to connect with each other. 
  • Tuesday 9 March. #choosetochallenge (International Women's Day 2021 celebration)
    This face-to-face workshop will run from 4-6pm. 
    You'll hear from a panel of three leaders working in academia, corporate and startups as they discuss how to challenge spaces and individuals to promote and support women. We'll be joined by panelists Anita Siek, Founder of Wordfetti, Anne-Marie Birkill, Director and Venture Partner at OneVentures and Alisha Geary, Founder of Faebella and Umelore.
    This session will be followed by a Q&A and networking session. 
  • Tuesday 16 March. Persuading with confidence
    This live Zoom session will run from 4-5.30pm 
    In this workshop, you will hear from Founder of ParentTV, Sam Jockel and learn the art of storytelling, pitching and persuasion. This session will be followed by a Q&A and networking. 
  • Tuesday 23 March. Pivoting and progressing with confidence 
    This face-to-face workshop will run from 4-6pm. 
    In this session, we will be joined by Career Consultant Bec McIntosh, who will talk about how to plan for career changes and progressions.
  • Tuesday 30 March. Creating a community and personal branding with confidence
    This live Zoom session will run from 4-5.30pm 
    Hear from experts Sally Dwyer and Pauline Fetaui on how to build a community of like-minded individuals to help to support each other. Learn how to ask for help and to be vulnerable with others.

All resources used throughout the program will be shared with the Ventures LeadHers community.

Ventures LeadHers is open to all female-identifying students, staff and recent alumni from all backgrounds and levels at UQ. To be eligible to apply, you must be:

  • a current UQ student, staff member or young alumni (graduated in the last 10 years)
  • be ready to build your knowledge and skills
  • commit to attending all five weekly workshops

PhD Program

Ventures LeadHers is open to all female-identifying UQ PhD candidates and PhD alumni from all backgrounds. To be eligible to apply, you must be:

  • a current UQ PhD or PhD alumnus
  • be ready to build your knowledge and skills
  • commit to attending all five weekly workshops
