A mindset shift – not just a new experience, but a new perspective

Written by Elouise, Doctor of Philosophy

At the dawn of 2024, I ventured across continents to Silicon Valley, a hub of innovation and inspiration, for an immersive month-long experience that reshaped my mindset significantly.

Throughout the UQ San Francisco Startup AdVentures trip I learnt alongside a San Francisco-based startup for four weeks and had the opportunity to dive-in to everyday San Francisco life.

Some highlights from my month in the Bay Area

  1. Empowering Experience at Persist AI
Collaborating with a visionary CEO at Persist AI not only honed my skills in artificial intelligence and marketing, but also allowed me to witness their groundbreaking work in accelerating pharmaceutical formulations. I was inspired by their work and the market problem they are trying to solve. The opportunity to continue contributing remotely from Australia is an opportunity I am very excited about.

  2. Entrepreneurial Camaraderie
Engaging with 19 like-minded UQ peers that were also passionate about entrepreneurship fostered enrichindiscussions, shared insights, and forged lasting bonds. The collective wisdom and diverse experiences shared during this entrepreneurial odyssey were invaluable.

  3. Immersive Industry Insights
From exclusive visits to tech giants like Meta, Salesforce Tower, Slack, and Tesla to networking events in biotechnology and AI sectors, each encounter provided a glimpse into the inner workings of these industry titans. Conversations with industry experts illuminated innovative problem-solving approaches while making international connections.

A significant insight gleaned from conversations with numerous accomplished entrepreneurs is that none of them achieved success with their initial venture. Nevertheless, their perseverance and dedication ultimately led them to success.

My key takeaways from the Bay Area

  1. AI Revolution

Interactions at the AI User Conference and insights from industry leaders highlighted the transformative potential of AI and robotics in reshaping our daily lives.

  2. ‘Rejection Therapy’
Embracing rejection as a stepping stone to success reframed my approach to challenges. Get used to hearing 'no' until the rejection no longer phases you transforms your relationship with rejection. The more you ask, the more likely you are to hear the answer 'yes' and win opportunities.

  3. The Power of Connections
The vibrant startup ecosystem in the Bay Area underscored the significance of networking and collaboration. In my personal experience, serendipitous encounters at LinkedIn headquarters led to valuable connections that opened doors to new opportunities.

This immersive journey not only broadened my horizons but also instilled invaluable lessons that transcend borders and industries. To fellow UQ students seeking a life-altering experience, I wholeheartedly endorse this transformative opportunity that promises to redefine your outlook on entrepreneurship and innovation, as well as your perspective about the world more broadly.
