Every intake, we ask the students applying to our Ventures' programs a fairly plain question: what are you interested in? Five themes came through clearly, and the way they overlap says more than any of them do on their own.
We found that the 5 most common themes were well over one hundred, which is the actual finding. Students named multiple interests, and the combinations were where the specificity lived.

1. Technology and AI, almost always pointed at something else (47%)
Nearly half of all student applicants mentioned technology or artificial intelligence. That is not surprising but what is surprising is how few of them were interested in the technology for its own sake.
Students described AI as a means to an end, and the ends were mostly human ones. One wants study tools that can show a student what they have actually learned, what they have skipped, and what to work on next. Another is interested in combining AI with behavioural psychology so that self-improvement feels less like a chore. Several were drawn to the governance side of it: ethics, cybersecurity practice, testing regimes, the question of what standards should exist and who sets them.
Robotics showed up as a persistent sub-theme. Manufacturing, construction and healthcare came up repeatedly as places where students think physical automation is overdue.
2. Environment and sustainability, as a lens rather than a topic (32%)
Environment was the second most frequently used single topic across all responses, appearing 60 times. But the responses were rarely generic climate concern.
An environmental management student wrote about the inefficiency of waste recycling and wanting to make the process simpler for people to actually do. Another was interested in sustainable architecture and what it takes to keep communities well when the climate around them is changing, with technology as part of the answer.
What stood out is that sustainability almost never appeared alone. It was attached to food systems, to engineering, to design, to social equity. Students are not treating it as a sector to work in. They are treating it as a constraint that applies to whatever they end up building.
3. Health and wellbeing: from lab to living room (32%)
Health was as prominent as sustainability, and it stretched across an unusually wide range.
At one end, students wrote about serious biomedical ambition: contributing to the development of new medicines and vaccines, diagnostics in female reproductive health, cell therapies for rare disorders, cancer treatment. At the other end, students were thinking about everyday access. One wants to take the kind of athletic movement analysis currently locked inside expensive sports science labs and make it available to ordinary athletes.
Fitness, mental health, nutrition and biotechnology all featured. The common thread is a suspicion that good health outcomes are being rationed by cost and access rather than by knowledge.
4. Food, and a lot of it (23%)
Here is the result that surprised us most. Food was the single most-mentioned word in the entire dataset, appearing 67 times.
It rarely appeared on its own. Students paired it with sustainability, with science, and with culture. One wrote about sustainable production, functional foods, and the commercial potential of fermentation. Another simply listed food alongside fashion and hospitality, which tells you something about how this cohort groups the world.
5. Arts, fashion, and culture (23%)
Almost a quarter of students named arts, fashion, or design as a core interest, and they very often named it in the same breath as technology or a social cause.
This is worth sitting with. Creative industries entrepreneurship is sometimes treated as a niche within university startup programs, something adjacent to the 'real' business of deep tech and biotech. On this evidence, it is not niche within our cohort at UQ. It is certainly showing to be more of a mainstream student interest than expected, and the students holding it are already thinking commercially.
The intersection of themes is the finding
As mentioned, these themes were referenced by mulitple students in multiple ways - highlighting their unique combinations of interests.
AI plus education. AI plus psychology. Sustainability plus architecture. Sustainability plus food. Health plus consumer technology. Fashion plus supply chain ethics. Very few students described a single vertical. Most described an intersection, and most of those overlaps were between a technology and a lived human problem.
That has a practical implication for how Ventures' runs programs. Cohorts sorted neatly by discipline will miss most of what these students are trying to do. The environmental management student and the software engineering student are, on this evidence, frequently trying to solve the same problem from opposite ends.
