Entrepreneurship at The University of Queensland (UQ), received over 45 nominations in the 3 categories of Community, Entrepreneurship and Student leadership.

Dermatologist and community leader in cancer prevention, Dr Clare Mahon, won in the UQ Ventures LeadHers Awards category, Community Award.

As Director of not-for-profit charity Ubuntu Through Health, Dr Mahon helped establish cervical cancer screening and provide uterine prolapse surgeries for women that the Nepalese government does not subsidise. This project continues today, and fundraising events have raised over $10,000 annually towards this initiative.

Dr Mahon works part-time on her Master of Philosophy at UQ investigating how to predict melanoma earlier in pregnancy and clinically part-time in dermatology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

She also volunteers on an Australian-wide research project, where she performs skin checks alongside total body photography. Dr Mahon has engaged over 1,000 hours in this project and has performed skin checks and imaging for over 800 people.

Dr Mahon firmly believes that celebrating women and gender diverse entrepreneurs and leaders is crucial.

“Firstly, it acknowledges the significant contributions and often sacrifices that women must make to achieve equally to their male counterparts,” Dr Mahon said.

“Women are still facing stereotypes and biases in most fields, and events such as this continue to break down barriers, promote inclusivity and
encourage women to be proud of their work and seek out leadership roles.

“Wonderful events such as the UQ Ventures LeadHers Rise gives women an opportunity to network and share experiences of their unique challenges.

“These events are about inspiring the next generation of women to pursue their careers with confidence and determination.”
