The first confidence-building incubator for women leaders at UQ

LeadHers is an Idea Hub initiative targeted for women across all disciplines who are in or want to become managers, entrepreneurs, researchers or academics. The program aims to support women to become more confident in their leadership capabilities while exploring common challenges most professional female leaders face in their career.

As part of the LeadHers program you will:

  • increase your self-awareness and reflection skills
  • understand elements that undermine your confidence and how to combat them
  • network and learn from leading female speakers
  • learn strategies and actions to put in place to become a confident leader
  • have access to resources and networks to support you growing after the program finishes.

Semester One program

Throughout the six-weeks sessions will include talks, workshops and networking opportunities. 

  • Week 1. Introduction to the program, Q&A and networking
    UQ Startup Adventurer Risa Utama will share her experience interning at startups in Singapore. 
  • Week 2. Confidence building 
    In this session, we dive into the individual, social and cultural elements that undermine women's confidence in the workplace.
  • Week 3. Mentoring and sponsoring
    You will have to chance to listen to a panel on the role of mentoring and sponsoring in your career. This semester's panel will include Cherie Curtis (CEO, Revelian), and Clare Sheng (Director, The Fitting Room on Edward).  
  • Week 4. Leading teams and projects with confidence
    You will have to chance to listen to a panel on leadership styles for women from all backgrounds. This semester's panel includes Rachel Huang (ilab entrepreneur), Bernadette Hyland-Wood (UQ researcher and former entrepreneur) and Claudia Gonzalez (UQ marketing lecturer). 
  • Week 5. Navigating difficult conversations and networking
    Through hands-on learning, we work on strategies to work on each participant unique leadership style and how to deal with difficult situations at work that could undermine your confidence. You will also master the art of networking by actor and leadership coach Angie Milliken.
  • Week 6. Movie screening and discussion
    During this session, Professor Bronwyn Fredericks (Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Indigenous Engagement). You will also watch the documentary film She Started It which follows five women following their startup dreams. Afterwards, you'll discuss the themes and learnings with your peers.  

All resources used throughout the program will be shared with the LeadHers community. You will be asked to keep a journal reflecting on each session.

LeadHers is open to all female students, staff and recent alumni from all backgrounds and levels at UQ. You are required to attend all six workshops.

Students who complete the program will be eligible to apply for our Startup Adventures program – our four-week international internships in global startup hotspots from Shanghai, San Fran, Shenzhen, Tel Aviv & Singapore, supported by a full scholarship.
